Your clothes are part of your brand message. Plan outfits around your brand, audience and where the content will appear. Vary silhouette and colour without creating unnecessary change time.

Start with your audience

Dress for the people you want to work with. A corporate consultant, a wellness coach and a creative designer will each make different choices. Ask yourself what your ideal client would expect to see when they meet you, then dress one step more polished than that.

Use your brand colours, gently

You don’t need to wear your logo colours head to toe. Pick one or two brand tones and use them as accents or in one outfit. Neutrals such as cream, navy, camel, grey and black tend to photograph well and work across many backgrounds.

Think about the sets

Nottingham Content Studio’s styled looks include soft curves, arched features, warm ambient lighting and statement seating. Choose outfits that contrast with the set you plan to use so you don’t blend into the background.

What photographs well

  • Solid colours and subtle textures
  • Well-fitted clothes that have been steamed
  • Structured pieces such as blazers and tailored trousers
  • Layers that can be added or removed between shots
  • Simple accessories that reflect your personality

What to avoid

  • Small, tight patterns and fine stripes, which can flicker on video
  • Large logos from other brands
  • Very shiny fabrics that reflect light unevenly
  • Anything you don’t feel comfortable sitting, standing and moving in
  • Brand-new shoes you haven’t worn in

Vary silhouette, not just colour

Three outfits in different colours but the same shape can look repetitive. Mix a tailored look, a relaxed look and a statement piece to give your content range.

Plan for video too

If you are recording talking-head content, consider where a lavalier microphone will clip. Tops with a collar, lapel or neckline make mic placement easier and neater.

Final checks before the shoot

  • Try every outfit on and take a phone photo.
  • Steam everything and hang in order.
  • Pack accessories, shoes and touch-up kit with each look.
