Instagram Reels reward consistency and a strong opening. Write hooks before the session and group Reels by visual setup so you can record more without constantly rebuilding the set.

Decide what your Reels are for

Reels can attract new followers, build trust with existing ones or drive enquiries. Give each Reel a role:

  • Reach: relatable, shareable, trend-aware content.
  • Trust: tips, behind-the-scenes, proof and stories.
  • Conversion: offers, product demonstrations and clear calls to action.

Write hooks first

The opening line and first frame decide whether someone keeps watching. Write the hook for every Reel before you arrive, and consider recording two versions of each. Hooks that name a problem, promise a result or challenge an assumption tend to hold attention.

Plan by format

  • Talking Reels: direct-to-camera tips or stories.
  • Text-on-screen Reels: visual clips with captions carrying the message.
  • Voiceover Reels: B-roll with narration recorded separately.
  • Transition Reels: outfit, set or before-and-after changes.
  • Carousel-to-Reel: a sequence of photos turned into motion.

Group by visual setup

Rebuilding a set or moving lights for every Reel wastes time. Instead, list each Reel against the set, outfit and lighting it needs, then film everything that shares a setup together. With several styled looks in one studio, you can create visual rhythm across your feed without rebuilding anything.

Shoot for vertical

Frame in 9:16 and keep key details within the central safe area, away from the caption and button zones. Film a few seconds of extra footage before and after each take to give yourself editing room.

Capture a B-roll bank

For every look, capture short clips that can sit under text or voiceover: walking, sitting, turning, working, pouring, product handling. These turn ideas into Reels long after the shoot.

A sample two-hour Reels session

  • 0–15 min: set up lighting and test framing
  • Look 1: four talking Reels and B-roll
  • Look 2: transition and text-on-screen Reels
  • Look 3: product or behind-the-scenes Reels
  • Final 15 min: back up, pack down and reset
